"Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future." (John F. Kennedy)

The Apple Tree Project of Interfaith Ministries (IFM) of Denton is a chance to help the nearly 40% of all children living in the Denton ISD who live in poverty as defined by the Federal Govt Poverty Guide. That translates to over 7,000 children in need of assistance for the upcoming 2007-08 school year.

Assistance is given to over 755 children because of the generous hearts of Denton business owners, organizations, churches, and individuals like you that many of our children have new clothes, shoes and basic school supplies to begin each school year.

The goal is to provide these essential items to 800 or more children. This means an economic impact of over $100,000 to our business community. Additionally, it is a way that our DENTON UU FELLOWSHIP (DUUF) can be more visible, an expressed part of our Vision Statement. Here is how you can help.

1) Adopt your child and buy 2 sets of clothing for a youngster of your choice. Instructions & a Red Apple with size/color information will be provided. Contact Wendy Leung who can be reached at by email at WLeung50@hotmail. com. You can partner up with one or more people if costs seem prohibitive.

If this is your choice, your "shopping bag" can be left in the DUUF office by the last Sunday each July, or Wendy can pick it up from your home and deliver it to IFM.

2) Make a tax deductible contribution by mailing it to Interfaith Ministries of Denton, Inc., PO Box 1744, Denton, TX 76202. To use your credit card, visit www.ifmdenton.org and click on the PayPal icon.

If this is your choice, please let Wendy know so we can recognize you as having participated as part of DUUF in this particular Social Action project.

3) You can do both Choice 1 & 2!

4) You can contact Interfaith Ministries directly by calling 940-566-2927 or visiting the office at 109 W. Sycamore St. in Denton.

Thank you for giving this opporunity your attention. We hope you will choose to participate in some way in this once-a-year, Back-to-School program of Interfaith Ministries of Denton, Inc.

Equal Rights For All Texans

MARRIAGE AND MORAL VALUES
Advocacy in the Language of our Values
Supporting Civil Marriage

On November 8, 2005 Texas voters amended the state constitution banning civil marriage for same-gender couples. The amendment is far-reaching enough to outlaw any form of civil union and domestic partnership, including heterosexual common-law marriage. Religious fundamentalists and conservative politicians have traditionally used inflammatory language to mobilize or foment opposition to "gay marriage." The only creative way to counter that divisive language is by supporting Civil Marriage in the language of our guiding principles.

Denton Community Food Center

Dorothy Van Dyck, a longtime member and friend of DUUF, is a volunteer and Board member of the Denton Community Food Center. A teacher and counselor, she also has a long history of community service, from League of Women Voters to the State School to Friends of the Family and more. DUUF Members and Friends Diana Campbell and Suzanne Blalock also speak to the importance of the food center. Please bring basic food items for an ongoing special collection.

Please bring unopened, unexpired cans and boxes of basic food, not fancy food for our special collection for the Food Center. Examples: beans, rice, vegetables, fruit, tuna, etc.

Basic food items are used in packing two units of food, which every client gets.

Our Daily Bread

An exciting ministry which began in June 2000 is Our Daily Bread, a soup kitchen which serves a noon meal at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Monday through Friday of each week. While it takes place at St. Andrew, this is a broadly based ecumenical endeavor, reaching out in Faith with people from diverse churches—Presbyterians, Methodists, Roman Catholics, ELCA Lutherans, Missouri Synod Lutherans, non-denominational Christians, members of the Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, Baptists, and Episcopalians.
