Supporting Civil Marriage
On November 8, 2005 Texas voters amended the state constitution banning civil marriage for same-gender couples. The amendment is far-reaching enough to outlaw any form of civil union and domestic partnership, including heterosexual common-law marriage. Religious fundamentalists and conservative politicians have traditionally used inflammatory language to mobilize or foment opposition to "gay marriage." The only creative way to counter that divisive language is by supporting Civil Marriage in the language of our guiding principles.
