Ministerial Contract FAQ

Why the FAQ? On Sunday, July 8, 2007 a special congregation meeting called Rev. Heath and Rev. Metzger to a renewable one year Consulting Ministry beginning September 1, 2007.

Why do we need a contract with our ministers? The purpose of the contract is to clarify expectations. Bill and Diana need to know what we expect from them, and we need to know what they expect from us. The contract spells out important arrangements so we can avoid misunderstandings.

What is Consulting Ministry? Technically speaking, Consulting Ministry is à la carte ministry – a congregation contracts for certain ministerial services (such as preaching or pastoral counseling) for a certain period of time. It’s usually used by small congregations who can’t afford even a half-time minister. We’re calling this arrangement Consulting Ministry because it is neither a settled ministry (an open-ended call) nor an interim ministry (generally limited to one year).

What is the length of the contract? The contract is for one year – September 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.

What happens at the end of the year? The contract may be renewed by mutual consent. Decisions have to be made by May 31.

How long will we continue the year-to-year arrangement? As long as it continues to meet the needs of the congregation and the needs of the ministers.

Are we getting two for the price of one? No. Diana and Bill will share the position, dividing the duties according to their skills and experiences. They will take turns preaching, but sometimes will co-lead a service.

How often will Diana or Bill preach? In general, twice a month. As always, the Sunday Services calendar will be scheduled by the Worship Committee, who will do their best to match opportunities with the availability of our ministers and guest speakers.

Will they be at DUUF on the Sundays they’re not preaching? They’ll be in attendance on one Sunday and off on one Sunday each month.

What else will they do? All the usual things that ministers do: work with the Board and other committees, advise our RE staff, provide pastoral care, and represent us in the community.

That sounds like a lot! It is… and we may find that our demand for Bill and Diana’s services exceeds the limits of a half-time position. If so, the ministers and the Board will work together to set priorities.
